Within the Indian territory, parts of the Ladakh region experienced a mild earthquake on the Richter scale measuring 5.2 on April 4, 2024, late in the evening, with the tremors felt by people living across many parts of this northern state. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the epicenter of the quake was located some 35 kilometers south of Padam city, where some 25,000 people live. The seismic activity was recorded up to 21 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, where such shaking was considered significant but with very few immediate reports of damage or possible casualties.
Similarly, at 11:08 pm, a light magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported in Ladakh, 26 km southwest of Padam, Kargil by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake was very shallow, being located at some 10 kilometers deep; the surface shaking could thus be somewhat pronounced at times. However, reports by press time so far would tend to indicate that, even though the tremors were definitely felt, they apparently caused no serious damage or injury.
The quake, which came late at night, was registered by all those that were indoors at the time. Despite possible risks, initial feedback from affected zones showed that there were no casualties or substantial damage. Weak shaking was felt in most places of the close vicinity to the epicenter, including Padam town, although the impacts were brought down due to resilience in local infrastructure and preparedness from the citizens.
That is to mean, the Tibetan Plateau, in this case, the region of Ladakh, lies in an excessively rugged terrain and stunning landscapes, but with its own share of the seismic activities on the basis of geographical positioning close to the tectonic plate boundaries. The difference, however, probably comes in the local authorities’ consistency and the disaster management teams at work towards enhancing earthquake preparedness of the area.
Local news has since picked up quickly, with social media even calling on netizens to assure public calm and adherence to safety protocols. Reports from citizens of the shock in places such as New Delhi showed that the quake was felt but did not cause panic or damage.
That was another reminder of just how capricious nature and its disaster events can be, underlying readiness and resiliency. While the region has taken a big sigh of relief this time, all efforts now focus on improving disaster response mechanisms and speeding up community awareness programs so that safety may not be compromised and risk brought to a minimum in case of future earthquakes.
